Black Mesa Disturbance

Dimensions: 12" x 24"
Media: Oil
Notes: Gallery Wrapped Canvas. Painting is in a Private Collection.

This painting was inspired by Black Mesa outside Espanola, New Mexico. Black Mesa was named because it frequently appears to be very dark and even black from a distance. When this painting was inspired, it actually looked more blue thanks to the shadows and position of the sun. Regardless of the color, Black Mesa is an impressive and beautiful part of the Northern New Mexico landscape that is well known to locals. Black Mesa is on Native American land and holds special significance to them so access to the mesa is restricted. Black Mesa is near the Rio Grande river and is famous for its unique shape. It was also the site of a well-known standoff between Spanish forces and Native Americans in 1680. While it isn't possible for most people to actually climb onto Black Mesa, it is possible to visit a number of excellent artist studios in the area. There are also a number of famous and excellent restaurants in the area and nearby pueblos and other unique locations (such as Puye Cliff Dwellings) that can be visited.
