This painting was inspired by livestock resting near the city of Gallup New Mexico. Gallup, founded in 1881, is located along the historic Route 66 on the far west side of the state near the Arizona border. Gallup is a small city of just over 20 thousand residents with a large part of the population being made up of Native Americans from the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni tribes. The area is surrounded by very rugged but beautiful terrain and has been used many times over the years for the filming of various western movies. Gallup is a truly authentic New Mexico town with strong, patriotic, and kind people living in the stunning but rugged beauty of New Mexico.
