La Gran Dama (the Great Lady) was inspired by a beautiful large tree near the Rio Grande river in the San Ildefonso Pueblo. The tree can be seen from NM-502 on the route between the San Ildefonso Pueblo and Los Alamos. The large majestic trees near the river are beautiful all year long but the fall colors truly make them breathtaking. The entire drive from the San Ildefonso Pueblo to Los Alamos can be awe-inspiring with incredible landscapes ranging from the lazy Rio Grande river to the arid to Mexico Desert to the rugged canyons and mesas as you approach Los Alamos nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains where the high desert gives way to towering Pondarosa Pine trees and the majestic Jemez Mountains. If you look closely at the base of many cliffs, you can spot remnants of ancient Indian dwellings identifiable by caves in the cliffside with small holes above the openings that were once used to support beams for structures built outside of the caves. It’s easy to see why, during World War II, Los Alamos was selected as the site for the ultra-top secret Manhattan project. The area is remote and accessing the “city on a hill” requires traversing roads with sheer cliffs rising on one side and dropping off on the other side of the road.
