Other Paintings

While Maria specializes in New Mexico scenary, she does occassionally do other projects at the request of certain clients. Examples of some of these other projects can be seen in this section.

Rowdy Raptor

With the arid conditions of the state being ideal for fossil preservation and prospecting, New Mexico is home to a bounty of dinosaur fossils from the Triassic and Jurassic time periods. Rowdy Raptor is a fun piece intended to reflect New Mexico's rich natural history that can be found in areas such as Ghost Ranch, where over a thousand fossils that span these geologic time periods were discovered near each other. These fossils included the official state fossil of New Mexico, Coelophysis. Coelophysis, though not a raptor itself, sits at the base of the family tree for the group of dinosaurs that would later include the entire raptor family! Being smaller than most other dinosaurs at the time, these swift little carnivores had hollow bones, and relied on their speed and agility to catch a variety of small animals, insects, and even other Coelophysis! They used their sharp teeth and dexterous claws to hold and kill their prey, as well as for protection from various threats that resided in the New Mexico of the Triassic period.

Lanna's Pet

Lanna's Pet is a piece intended to represent the fun aspects of New Mexico's Jurassic history, including this rendering of the Camarasaurus. The Camarasaurus belongs to a group of dinosaurs called sauropods, which are generally known for their impressive size, long necks, and four thick pillar-sized legs. This picture represents the rich history of fossils found in New Mexico, as this particular dinosaur was found in the small native village of San Ysidro located just outside of Albuquerque
